I found the correct answer to this question when I attended the Volunteer Enrichment seminar held last Saturday attended by the Members of the CSI groups- YWC, TOPS and ACT Now.
The seminar inspired me a lot to do volunteer work. Really the best way to convince someone to volunteer is to share experiences and share the happiness you feel by doing so. And that’s exactly what Shiela Buscani, the first speaker, did. She discussed about the three C’s of volunteering (Compassion, Commitment and Cooperation) and the three K’s of volunteering (Kapwa Tao, Kusang Loob and Kabutihan(Not sure about this last one). Now I know that I should volunteer now because I have extra time with me or because my friend wants me to, but because of my own desire to share. I realized that it is because I realized that God has blessed me so much, and I want to share those blessing with people who are not so fortunate like me. Truly, we ought to get out of our comfort zone once in a while and experience life at its simplest like the people we help out. Because it is only by doing away with the complexities of life where we can live a life that’s real and fulfilling!
Another good thing I got from this seminar was Shiela’s amazing story about her parents. Her mom is a native Ilongga who speaks not so good English. Her father is an Indian we does not understand Filipino nor Ilonggo. But they never fight because they don’t understand each other! How ironic! Usually, the reason why people fight is because they don’t understand each other. But then, here is the beautiful story of two people who see each other eye to eye using the universal language called love. If only we are all to love each other..then nobody would be fighting at all!
The second part of the seminar I listened to Jamie’s talk on teaching and sharing of talents. What struck me most during Jamie’s talk was the epitaph on the tombstone: What I spend is gone. What I saved, I lost. What I gave I have. How very true! We can never bring our riches to heaven -or to hell for that matter. But what will remain even when we die is our legacy to those people whom we have helped during out lifetime. The parable of the talents was an appropriate allegory to sharing one’s blessings. True enough, talents are not given to us by God only for us to keep. We need to share them with other people in order to show them how generous our God is. This is also one way of giving back to God what He has given us.
